Over the years Ms. Caine has painted figures and still life but recently has become interested in landscapes, currently the big vistas of the American West. She does small plein air paintings and large canvases in her studio. “I am intrigued with the atmosphere that is created by showing large pieces together in a small/medium space and the emotional impact this atmosphere has on the viewer. I like the idea of art encircling the audience, of art as an installation, of physically taking the viewer through a setting that is created by paintings, not just looking at one painting on a wall”.
However, Ms. Caine still loves the painting of an individual canvas and personal expression remains a most valued characteristic of her art.
Artist statement
My art reflects my life at-the-moment. I began by painting the figure, larger than life, from photos and live model. I next explored landscape and plein air painting and also other encounters with nature. I delved into the use of color, texture, paint quality and application using simple still lifes. Recently I embarked on a new series of paintings of my granddaughter doing fantastic things, a combination of interest in nature, color, figure, and painting as an installation.
"We live in a time of great discord. The past year has been full of unhappiness for so many, for our country, our environment and our world. I wake every morning to new broadsides -- messages filled with hate, behavior that I find unacceptable. I could turn off my cell phone and computer. I could decide not to read the paper or watch TV. And sometimes I do for a few days, pushing this reality away. But I always come back to the world and choose to appreciate what is wonderful about being a part of it. I am in awe of the beauty around me -- sunrises, super moons, a new snowfall, below zero weather, the anticipation of spring. I am grateful for the privilege of being human, with all its emotions and its ups and downs. I commit to doing what I can to protect the things I believe in. I resolve to try to make the world a better place in whatever way I can.
One of my great joys is my granddaughter Hedda. I love to watch her excitement while experiencing new things – her ability to hold up her head, the eating of new foods, the love of mangos, learning to stand and walk, the delight on her face when she sees her parents. Getting her to smile at me is a great pleasure. She appreciates all my jokes."
